With just four ingredients, this is probably the easiest dessert I’ve made. It was my great grandmother’s recipe, and growing up, my family has always loved it. Who would guess that you could just layer cherry pie filling, crushed pineapple, cake mix, and butter, pop into the oven, and come out with something amazing?

What is a Dump Cake?

We always laugh at the name “dump cake”, I mean- can we all agree that there’s got to be a better name? But at this point, people have been using the name for decades for the simple fact that these recipes are just a matter of dumping just a few easy ingredients together to make the most delicious cakes!

Most of the dump cakes that I have tried involve spreading pie fillings into the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish, followed by a layer of cake mix. Top it all off with sliced butter and into the oven it goes! As it bakes, the juices bubble up and the cake mix transforms into a cobbler-like crust.

Extra ingredients can be added if you’d like to play around with flavors like chopped nuts, coconut, and more. You can also easily swap in one pie filling for another or change the flavor of cake mix!

How to Make Easy Cherry Pineapple Dump Cake:

Here are the main ingredients–a yellow cake mix, a can of cherry pie filling, a can of crushed pineapple, and butter. Four simple ingredients– you don’t even need to prepare the cake mix according to package instructions! We’re just going to sprinkle it over the fruit later…

First, spread the cherry pie filling into a 9×13 dish.

Follow that with the crushed pineapple…

Top the layers of fruit with the dry yellow cake mix, and top it all off with sliced butter. That’s it! The butter will melt into the other ingredients and magical things will begin to happen once it’s in the oven.

Bake until it turns golden brown and bubbles up.

Allow to cool and enjoy! I love to serve it warm with homemade whipped cream, cool whip, or ice cream!

It is still soft when sliced, much like our Apple Crisp, but it is ohhh SO good! I love the combination of pineapple and cherries. Your friends and family are going to love it.

The layer of cake on top is fairly thin and makes a super easy and flavorful crust for our fruit filling.

Cherry Pineapple Dump Cake Recipe

This dump cake recipe is a classic! So simple to make and tastes delicious!

Ingredients

1 (21 oz) can Cherry Pie Filling
1 (20 oz) can Crushed Pineapple, undrained
1 box Yellow Cake Mix (I used Duncan Hines Classic Yellow)
2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, thinly sliced

Instructions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

Spread the cherry filling into the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish

Then, layer on the crushed pineapple.

Sprinkle the yellow cake mix over the pineapple (I like to sift my cake mix first but that is optional)

Layer on the sliced butter and bake until bubbling and light golden- this should take about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
